Hello my travel giraffes! Today’s post I am going to jump straight in and give you all the details on how to get cheap flights. Travelling is something that everyone should be able to do if they want to and if I can help with this post then I’ve done my job. Here we go!

How to Get Cheap Flights

Be Flexible with Dates

Travelling off-peak is a gift from the travel gods and one that everyone should utilise if they can. I understand that if you have children in school it might be challenging however, if you aren’t restricted with dates travel off-peak.

Usually this means travelling when children are in school. If you are a sun chaser, then look for flights early May or end of September. Places like Bali would have stopped their rainy season by the second week of May. If you’re looking to go to places in Greece it’s still scorching end of September until mid October.

Be Flexible with Locations

Try visiting somewhere new once in a while. You might be surprised at what you learn about somewhere new and yourself. SkyScanner has a great tool that allows you to just enter dates and it will show you the places that you can get cheap flights for.

Wait for the Sales

Every year airlines have a sale. BA, Easyjet and Virgin Airlines tend to have an end of summer sale and winter sale. This would be the perfect time to buy flights for that long haul journey.

Thinking about visiting the USA or the Caribbean? Wait for flights to go on sale to these destinations.

Airmiles

I can’t stress how beneficial collecting airmiles are. Every airline you fly with that offer this, please sign up for their airmiles program. If you’re thinking about getting a credit card or switching, look for one that will give you avios points or airmiles with an airline.

American Express has a card in conjunction with BA and if you spend £3000 within the first 3 months you will earn 25,000 bonus airmiles. It may seem like a lot to spend but it isn’t if you add an annual travel card, food shopping and paying your phone bill. Virgin also has 2 credit cards where you can earn points, read more here.

Plan in Advance

If your dream holiday is to go on safari in Tanzania, don’t wait to buy tickets the same year you’d like to travel. Purchase it a year in advance or more if you can. It might also be helpful if you have kids in school and want to take them on this trip with you. Don’t forget to get your travel insurance sorted.

Be Spontaneous

I know I said to plan in advance but, you also need to be spontaneous. If you see a deal on a flight and can take the time off then book the flight. Airlines need to fill up seats and if a flight isn’t full 1 to 2 weeks before the flight is due to take off, they will reduce prices.

Sign-up to Newsletters

Another tip on how to get cheap flights you might find annoying so set up a separate email account for this. Whether it’s airline newsletters, or a travel website that finds deals sign up for their newsletters because they can do the work for you.
