Hello my lovely giraffes! What’s shaking in your neck of the woods? We all know by now that I love to travel. If you didn’t, you know now :). As much as I love to travel and see new exciting places, it isn’t perfect. I’m here to share 5 things no one tells you about travel and they’re not the good things.
5 Things No One Tells You About Travel
Flying Can be Uncomfortable
For me travelling starts with getting to the airport. It’s all the excitement from getting to the airport on time, possibly getting an upgrade and making it through security. Oh and of course the duty free shopping. That’s all fun stuff but what about when you’re on the actual plane. I love finding cheap flights like the next money savvy person but, I am not a fan of cramped like cattle seats. Not all airlines are created equal and sitting uncomfortably for 10 plus hours, on a plane is no fun. I had a bad experience flying to Perth because their seats were so uncomfortable. Since then I’ve vowed not to fly with that airline again.
Bad Weather
Picture it, your bags are packed filled with your bikinis and cute summer wear, only to land in pouring rain. Not only that but it rains every single day that you’re there. You may have picked the wrong season to visit your chosen destination. Oops! You won’t believe the number of times I’ve had to say to people, ”don’t travel to the caribbean during summer time”. It’s rainy season in that part of the world and specifically, hurricane season.
Underwhelming Tourist Sites
I’m sure you’ve seen the beautiful Instagram photos of your ‘must visit’ site. You think to yourself that you have to see this museum, building or whatever calls your name. You arrive at the place, only to find that it isn’t exactly what was pictured. It’s small or just really underwhelming. This is the equivalent to looking for a flat (apartment) online and when you view it, it can’t even fit a plant. Don’t get fooled by the Instagram photos, read the captions and do your research. For example, the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen is tiny compared to how it looks in pictures.
The Crack of Dawn
I am not a morning person, more like an insomnia person or night owl. Waking up at the crack of dawn to go visit somewhere is my version of torture. Doesn’t mean I haven’t done it or wouldn’t do it again it’s all about balance for me. You have to think about whether the end result will be worth it and if this is the type of holiday you had in mind. Sometimes, starting early means that you avoid the crowds and really enjoy the place that much more. It also means you have time to have a nap later!
The Food Can Make You Ill
Number 5 on my list of 5 things no one tells you about travel is, food. I am adventurous when it comes to trying new foods but, I’m aware that it can make me ill. To me food forms part of the culture of a country and if it is completely different from your norm, it could make you feel ill. My advice would be to always keep a little first aid kit complete with medicines that work for you and won’t be illegal in the country that you’re visiting. Do your research ;).
