Is self comparison a good thing

I recently read a blog post on success and it got me thinking about comparisons. We compare ourselves to others as a way of measuring success. Seems like a good idea right? Well maybe not! If you think about it you’re measuring your journey to someone else’s and that’s so inaccurate not to mention soul destroying.

Take for instance social media and the glossy, almost perfect life everyone is leading. Trust me, I get really down when I think about my life vs theirs. It isn’t as glamourous or lucrative by any stretch of the imagination. However, I do think there is some merit to comparison. Just not in the way you think.

Self Comparison

Instead of comparing yourself to someone else, how about comparing yourself to you? The you 5, 10 or 15 years ago, depending on your age, and see where you are on your journey.

When you compare yourself to another person, you’re basically saying that who you are isn’t good enough or they aren’t good enough. None of those scenarios are healthy or life affirming. You can be confident in who you are without the need to be arrogant!

Self comparison on the other hand gives you the opportunity to see where you have grown, which areas you need to improve on and the actions you need to take. It also gives you the opportunity to celebrate (because it is important) what you have accomplished.

In this fast paced world, where 21 year olds are making millions, kudos to them, it can be disheartening if you’re older or the same age and not ‘making it’. The truth is we all make it but just differently. We all have something unique and wonderful to offer to the world and ourselves. We just need to remember that! So the next time you feel disheartened, think of where you were a few years back and list all you’ve done since then. Somehow I have a feeling you will realise just how amazing you are 😉

Do you do the comparison thing? What do you think about self comparison? Let me know in the comments below.

Until next time, be well
