Is self comparison a good thing

self comparison on

I recently read a blog post on success and it got me thinking about comparisons. We compare ourselves to others as a way of measuring success. Seems like a good idea right? Well maybe not! If you think about it you’re measuring your journey to someone else’s and that’s so inaccurate not to mention soul destroying.

Take for instance social media and the glossy, almost perfect life everyone is leading. Trust me, I get really down when I think about my life vs theirs. It isn’t as glamourous or lucrative by any stretch of the imagination. However, I do think there is some merit to comparison. Just not in the way you think.

Self Comparison

Instead of comparing yourself to someone else, how about comparing yourself to you? The you 5, 10 or 15 years ago, depending on your age, and see where you are on your journey.

When you compare yourself to another person, you’re basically saying that who you are isn’t good enough or they aren’t good enough. None of those scenarios are healthy or life affirming. You can be confident in who you are without the need to be arrogant!

Self comparison on the other hand gives you the opportunity to see where you have grown, which areas you need to improve on and the actions you need to take. It also gives you the opportunity to celebrate (because it is important) what you have accomplished.

In this fast paced world, where 21 year olds are making millions, kudos to them, it can be disheartening if you’re older or the same age and not ‘making it’. The truth is we all make it but just differently. We all have something unique and wonderful to offer to the world and ourselves. We just need to remember that! So the next time you feel disheartened, think of where you were a few years back and list all you’ve done since then. Somehow I have a feeling you will realise just how amazing you are 😉

Do you do the comparison thing? What do you think about self comparison? Let me know in the comments below.

As always thank you for reading and don’t forget to subscribe.

Until next time, be well

Yaaaaaas!!! Oh my gosh, SO well said! Now more than ever when we have social media showing us people’s insides, sometimes it’s inescapable how other people can ‘seem’ to being doing better than us. I’m SUCH a huge believer in self comparison. Whenever I start to feel down about something I’ve been working on like my blog in comparison to others’, I compare it to my work one month, one year, four years ago and I feel so proud and can see the trajectory of where I am headed so much more clearly. Thank you for reminding me of this!!! FANTASTIC post! Jade x

Oh yes the social media machine can get to all of us. It’s really great that you take time to reflect on your journey and no one else! Thanks for stopping by x

This is a really thought provoking post. I try not to compare and when I do it’s never good thing. we must also remember what we see on social media are just highlights, they are what people want us to see. You never know the full story. It’s hard to remember that though when we see people jet setting
every month and showing their perfect bodies.

Yes! Funny how ‘highlights’ have impacted on so many of us. Thanks for commenting x

Loving this post! Comparison to others can be the thief of joy BUT totally agree in self comparison actually being the giver of joy when you see how much you can grow. Love it!

    Thanks for sharing,
