Hello my lovelies! Another skincare post for you this week but instead of talking about the latest product and treatment. I’m sharing advice I would give my younger self about skincare, in the hopes it helps any under 35’s. Actually, I hope it helps anyone who is currently abusing their skin. It’s the largest and most visible organ we have, care for it is important.
Advice I would give my younger self about Skincare
Drink Water
I was never a big water drinker until the last few years and I can’t believe I survived! When I was in my late teens and early 20s, if it was a choice between water and juice, juice always won. Fast forward to now and I enjoy drinking water. Don’t get me wrong, it was a process and sometimes can be but, I made it a habit of drinking water. You might think water has nothing to do with glowing skin but that’s where you’re wrong. We’re made up of 60% water, which is a lot! When you are suitably hydrated toxins are flushed out, joints are lubricated, and skin health is boosted. Drink your water!
Apricot Scrubs
I cannot tell you how amazing I used to think apricot scrubs were. There I was, scrubbing away all the dead cells thinking I was going to get the most amazingly smooth skin. So smooth that any bad karma or crappy boys would just slide away. Whilst I did get amazingly smooth skin, I also was creating micro tears which is not so good. I mean apart from causing my skin barrier to be compromised, I probably trapped the bad karma and crappy boys. None of which is a good combination. If you’re still using the apricot scrub, stop! Scrub your feet or body with it instead.
Acids are your friend
I’ve written about this before, here, but if I knew about acids then, my skin would be amazing! To be fair, it’s not bad except for redness on my cheeks. Anyway, go educate yourself about acids and how they can be helpful in exfoliating your skin. It also doesn’t create micro tears in your skin which is a blessing. Best believe if I could go back in time the advice, I would give my younger self about skincare, is to use acid.
Don’t delay Retinol away
I’ve known about retinols and the benefits for quite some time. However, for some reason I just didn’t start using it diligently until recently. Now that I have started to use it, I’m wondering, what took me so long! If you’re 30, you might want to investigate how to incorporate retinol use into your skincare routine. It can help your skin with a number of issues.
Skincare and Travel
The final piece of advice I would give my younger self about skincare is, add extra moisture whilst travelling. We all know that it’s recycled air which can be incredibly drying. With all the excitement of making the flight on time and getting to your destination, added moisture can be helpful. It could be a sheet mask or a suitably rich cream. Whatever it is I wish I knew this earlier which would have saved my skin many times over!
Caring for your skin requires consistency and a multipronged approach. Although I haven’t included it please remember that what works for someone, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. Figure out what does!
