Tips on Haggling whilst Holidaying

tips on haggling - bangkok

Haggling isn’t something that is the norm in the western world. You go into a store or shop and the price you see is usually the price you pay, unless there’s a sale on. If you visit a market stall, you may be able to wiggle your way to a lower price but not often. However, if you visit South East Asia, Dubai or Egypt, then haggling is pretty much expected. With that in mind, I’m sharing my tips on haggling that I picked up from one of the besties 🙂

Tips on Haggling

Price

The first tip is to ask the price of the item you’d like to purchase and then decide what you’d like to pay for it. Please be realistic and fair with what you’d like to pay. Don’t expect to pay £5 for something that is worth £25. That person still has to earn a decent living.

Simply Ask

I found that most places in Bangkok were happy when you asked about a discount. Be polite about it and smile sweetly! Being polite and kind is a universal language.

No Deal

If they don’t want to budge on the asking price, simply leave. There’s a 50/50 chance that they will be more willing to take part in haggling. It’s not fool proof but it’s worth a try. Plus if you’re in a place like Bali where there are loads of vendors in the Ubud Craft Market, you will not be lacking in alternatives.

Go Lower

If they’re willing to haggle then go lower than what you originally want to pay. It’s that psychological thing where, if you go lower then your chances of paying what you originally wanted to are more likely attained.

Later Can Be Greater

My final tip on haggling is to go later. If you can find out the closing time of a market, try and go a couple hours before closing time. Usually they’re more willing to give into your request, providing it is a reasonable one. For instance, I scored a 2 for 1 deal on a couple of straw handbags. He wanted to go home and I wanted to buy 🙂

These are my tips on haggling. If you use them and they work, be sure to tag me in a photo on Instagram! Have I left anything out? Let me know in the comments below.

Until next time, be well!
