Happy Saturday my loves. It’s also day 2 of London Fashion Week! Have you seen any catwalk shows? If so, do share I would love to know what you’ve liked so far. I’ve always dabbled in high-end items because, I believe the whole quality over quantity thing is actually beneficial. When you think about landfills overflowing with plastic or discarded items that we throw away, it makes you think. Plus there’s something to be said for wearing something that’s well made and that will last a long time. In light of this and that it’s London Fashion Week, I thought I would share with you my 3 investment worthy fashion items, coat edition.
Now this piece I fell in love with when I first moved to the UK. To me it represents Britain perfectly, with a lot of history attached to it yet it remains a timeless piece. Of course you know I’m talking about the trench coat. Orignally it was designed for Officers during WW1, to protect them against the elements. Thomas Burberry, invented the trench coat using garbadine because it can repel rain water and provide ventilation.Burberry Trench Coat- Stylebop
To me if the military used these coats during such extreme times and it survived, I’d say it’s worth having. Given the fact that the weather, especially in the UK, changes so rapidly, going from hot to pouring rain in hours a trench coat is necessary. Burberry trench coats are expensive, however, most people report being able to use theirs for a number of years. It is also worth having a look at Ebay and second hand designer shops, if a brand new one is way out of your budget. Another brand you can check out for trench coats are Aquascutum. They’ve been in the trenches with the trench coats as well.
Next up is the trusty leather jacket. I cannot tell you how much I love a leather jacket. It takes a plain white tshirt and jeans up a notch or, toughens up a girly floral print dress. Similar to the trench coat, the leather jacket has its start in the military. Brown leather jackets were worn by aviators and other military personnel during WW2. Lined to keep pilots warm, they were worn as part of their uniform. Popularised in the 1940s and 1950s through movies, the leather jacket became a staple in Hollywood action/adventure type movies.
To me a leather jacket has versatility and longevity, which is why investing in a well made and well fittling jacket is worth the investment. For those of you who like the look of leather but are opposed to real leather, there are excellent alternatives which you can also invest in. Another reason this is an investment worthy fashion item, is that it can be used in spring, early summer, autumn and sometimes winter.
Finally, it’s the winter coat. If you live in a temperate climate you know how valuable and vital a winter coat is. Now I could give you a mini history lesson as the others, but the trouble is we’ll be here until next month. Nobody has time for that. Here’s why!Winter Coat- Farfetch
The winter coat can be made out of different types of fabrics; wool, shearling, faux fur, down, fleece and so on. So with that in mind I will say whatever type of winter coat you’re partial to, look at the quality of the fabric. Ensure that the lining is in a material that will not irritate you, so you break out in hives. Also make sure that it fits your shape well and you can layer underneather it.
Those are my 3 investment worthy fashion items, coat edition. What did you think? Are there outwear pieces that I missed out? Let me know in the comments below.
