As we get older, our risk of developing health issues increases. Some of these health issues can be quite embarrassing, and many of us can be reluctant to accept them. However, recognising these health problems and discussing them can be essential for managing and treating them. Below are just some of the embarrassing health problems to be wary of in older age.
Embarrassing Health Problems To Be Wary Of As You Get Older
Hair loss
Hair loss is very common in old age. And it’s not just men that experience hair loss – as much as 55% of women report experiencing hair loss past the age of 70. In some cases, hair loss can be treated, however there are few reliable over-the-counter options, so you’ll need to be prepared to speak to a doctor. Hair loss is easier to treat if you catch it early, and women are more likely to be considered for treatment.
Incontinence
Not being able to control one’s bladder or bowel movements can be very embarrassing. But did you know that 10% of men and 50% of women report experiencing some form of incontinence past the age of 65? This makes it a very common condition. Products such as incontinence pants and pads are useful for managing incontinence. Certain exercises may also be able to combat incontinence, plus there could even be treatments worth exploring if you’re willing to talk to a doctor.
Haemorrhoids
The likeliness of developing piles also increases with age. In fact, some studies suggest that as much as 50% of people over the age of 50 have haemorrhoids. This condition can be very painful, but it needn’t be something you grin and bear. There are many different treatments to explore such as hemorrhoid creams and even forms of surgery. A doctor will be able to advise you as to what your options are.
Impotence
Impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction) affects men of all ages. However, it becomes much more common in older age. In fact, as many as 70% of men regularly experience ED by the time they reach their 70s. This is a condition that fortunately can be treated with prescription drugs like Viagra, however many men are hesitant to talk to a doctor about it, preventing them from getting a prescription. Make sure that you are not denying yourself treatment for this condition by not seeing a doctor.
Dementia
Dementia often develops slowly over many years and is a condition that many people are also embarrassed to accept until it becomes impossible to hide. People want to remain independent and don’t want to be seen as ‘senile’ and so stay in denial. However, diagnosing dementia early can help you to explore ways of managing and potentially slowing down its progression. If you’ve noticed yourself becoming more forgetful, consider whether it’s time to see a doctor. Expressing your feelings with friends and family could be important for helping you come to terms with your diagnosis, and you can also start preparing for the future (which can be a great help to your loved ones later on).
There’s nothing to really be embarrassed about, look after your health because health is wealth. Thank you for reading and until next time, be well! X
