Hello you beautiful travel bunnies! How have you been? Where are we travelling to next? You know that I’m always looking for a bargain and one of my suggestions is to travel on the shoulder seasons. With that in mind, here are 5 European destinations to visit in autumn because this might actually be the best time of year.
5 European Destinations to Visit in Autumn
Gothenburg
I hadn’t explored much of Scandanavia before, although I’ve been to Denmark and Norway before, Sweden however, I didn’t really visit. One random morning at 2am, I saw a deal on Jack’s Flight club and decided to book a few days in Gothenburg. During my time there, I visited the Museum of Gothenburg which gives a great account throughout the years. There are several floors and you can easily spend a day in there. If nature is more your thing then the Universeum might be right up your alley and also great if you’re travelling with children. There are areas that cover the human body, space, polar bears and a lot more! You can also take a paddan tour which is the boat version of city bus tours. I used the Go City pass where I bought a 48 hour pass which gave me entry to all these places and more. This enabled me to keep costs down. I’m really glad I went to Gothenburg as it’s wet my appetite to visit other parts of Sweden. Another tip is to book a hotel that gives you access to the sauna or steam room which comes in handy after walking around for hours!
Seville
I’ve shared before things you can do in Seville before here but it’s also one of those places you should visit in the autumn. The temperature is still fairly decent and there’ll probably less tourists so you can enjoy the various sights. According to the Lonely Planet, February to March, October to November are the best months to avoid crowds. One of the things I loved about Seville is the rich history, the ease of getting around and you get to take in a Flamenco show in its birthplace.
Zante (Zakynthos)
This Greek island is one of my favourites and is firmly on the must re-visit list. The next time I visit it will be in the autumn because as the guide told me years ago, the sea will still be warm after soaking up the warmth from the sun. And that is something I’d like to experience myself! Zakynthos has some of the bluest waters I’ve seen. Of course there’s the famous Navagio Beach which you can access by boat and from higher up you can see the rock shaped crocodile.
Sicily
Another place that I’d like to re-visit because it’s beautiful but also there are so many parts to Sicily that I am yet to explore. You can fly into Catania and take the train to other parts such as, Taormina which is pretty popular because of the views and beaches. Or you may like Ortigia or Palermo. Or, like me you might want to visit them all because who doesn’t want to get lost in the magic of Sicily.
Santorini
Finally, on this list of 5 European destinations to visit in autumn we’re going back to a Greek island and that’s Santorini. I’ve waxed lyrical about visiting in October a few years ago and found it to be the best time of year to visit. Whilst there were quite a few people around, it was nowhere near the summer crowds that descend unto the island. Apart from the spectacular sunsets, beautiful landscapes and black sand beaches you can also go hiking, visit an archeological site and volcano hot springs cruise. Santorini is more than just it’s beautiful sunsets.
These are 5 European destinations to visit in autumn, have I left anyone off the list? Let me know in the comments which destination you’d like to visit during the autumn season. As always, thank you for reading and until next time, be well! X
