We are smack dab in the throes of summer and if you’re in the UK, you’d know we’ve had some good days and some wet soggy days. Typical British summer if you think about it! If you’re planning on travelling this month and beyond, here are my 7 essential tips to have a great airport experience. Some of these tips you probably already know and some might be new. If I missed any, please share your essential tip in the comments below.
7 Essential Tips to Have a Great Airport Experience
Pack Light and Smart
We’ve all overpacked for a trip only to use 30% of what we took. I know I’ve been guilty of this but my packing game has greatly improved. I start by taking out all the items I’d like to take with me and then do a process of elimination. I’m a big fan of rinse and restyle items. If you don’t know what that is, it’s basically taking an item and restyling it at least 3 ways. I did a few Instagram reels showcasing this. Pinterest is a great way to get some inspiration on styling 1 piece different ways. As it’s summer, breathable fabrics such as, cotton, linen or linen blend and silk are great to pack with you. If you’re travelling to a colder climate think, wool or a wool mix blend, cashmere and thinner fabrics so you can layer. Travelling with handluggage only saves you time because you don’t need to check your baggage and flights tend to be cheaper. Go for an airline that offers generous hand luggage allowance like British Airways or Norwegian Airlines.
Check-In Online
Please check-in online and don’t wait until you get to the airport to check-in at the counter. Online check-ins allows you to choose and pay for the seat that you want at an affordable price. Similar to travelling with hand luggage only, you can go straight to the security section when you get to the airport. There’s no better feeling than going through the whole process effortlessly. Which brings me to the next point….
Wear Comfy Clothing
We can look put together in comfy clothing that won’t hamper or delay going through security. Loose fitting clothing, trousers that you can pull on or off, shoes or sandals that can be taken off and put back on easily can make the security and flight experience go alot easier and smoother. Plus if you have a long layover with access to a shower, it makes the whole changing process effortless.
Easy for You to Access Travel Info
There’s nothing worse than printing off your boarding pass or details and you can’t find them when you need them. You can have as many things digital and downloaded on your phone so you have easy access when needed. Place your passport in a place where it’s secure and easy for you to access. If you prefer old school and want to print off everything, get a travel document organiser which work well should you be travelling with a group.
Download Airline Apps
Most airlines have an app and it’s useful to download it after booking. You get up to date information on any flight delays or changes. Plus via the app you can find all your flight information and you can get notified of what gate you need to go to and when. Easyjet app is really great with providing all the information you need on the day of your flight.
Stay Hydrated
We all know that flying dehydrates you and can leave you feeling like a shrivelled up prune. So take an empty re-usable water bottle with you through security. Go find a water fountain and refill your bottle before it’s time to board your flight. It saves you from running out of water on the flight or only having the little bottles you get on some flights. Your skin and body will say thank you especially when you get off the flight feeling and looking good.
Airport Lounges
I’m a fan and will continue to be one especially with crack of the dawn flights or long layovers. There are a few ways you can have access to the lounges. Through your credit card, such as American Express Preferred Rewards Card or the Platinum Card. Travel first or business class or, pay for an annual membership with a company such as Priority Pass. The final way to access the airport lounge is to get a one-off pass.
Arrive Early
My final essential airport tip is to simply arrive early. It’s an oldie but a goodie. Wouldn’t you rather calmly arrive at the airport, go through security with sufficient time to browse duty free and chill in the airport lounge? I know I certainly would. So get there in plenty of time, avoid massive queues and enjoy the whole airport experience. For me, the trip starts when I get to the airport and it sets the tone for the trip.
