Hello my beauty skincare junkies! How have you been? More specifically what skincare products have you been trying? Let a fellow junkie know. Today’s post is all about the 5 skincare tips I wish I did sooner. There’s so much information out in the world today about skincare, which is great. However, it can also be a minefield especially as everyone’s skin is a bit unique. There are some things in my opinion that I wish I did sooner and seem to stand the test of time.
5 Skincare Tips I Wish I did Sooner
Wearing Spf During Winter
As a melanated woman, I used to take it for granted that my skin was always protected from the sun. To be fair I am protected but it’s not that much. Silly rabbit used to think, I can’t see the sun then I’m good. Nope! Not true. Actually, some clouds can create higher UV levels than a bright sunny sky. Essentially, just wear the spf year round and keep it pushing. You can read about my favourite spf here.
Double Cleansing
Who knew double cleansing your skin would make such a difference! The first cleanse gets rid of the surface level of dirt. Whereas, the second cleanse goes deeper to remove anything you missed especially spf and makeup. Also, if you cleanse using the 60 second technique you know your skin is as clean as can be. If it’s within your budget, start off with an oil or balm cleanser and then use something such as a gel or cream. Basically, whatever suits your skin that won’t strip the natural oils.
Starting Retinol
I’ve spoken at length about retinol and the benefits of it. My one regret is not starting it sooner and now I get tretinoin which is retinol from Dermatica. It’s one of the only ingredients that helps with cell turnover, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, exfoliates, increases collagen and more. Yes it is that amazing! Of course if you’re in your 20s, taking good care of your skin there’s a high probability that you won’t need retinol. I do wish that I had started using it in my early 30s instead of my 40s. However, better late than never!
Focus on Ingredients
Brands put a lot of money and effort into marketing their product. One of the things they do is create pretty packaging and we fall for it. Only to buy the product and it’s that good because we didn’t look at the list of ingredients. If a product says it has hyaluronic acid and promotes it as such, you’d expect to see it in the top 5 on the list of ingredients. If it’s lower then it means there’s less of it and you won’t necessarily reap the benefits. Thank goodness for people like Caroline Hirons who talks about the importance of ingredients.
Professional Skin Treaments are Important
My final skincare tip I wished I did sooner was to invest in professional skin treatments. It isn’t a waste of money especially if you have an issue that you can’t solve. What’s a waste of money is buying products that don’t help. There’s only so much over the counter products can help with. Going to a professional who knows about your skin can be really beneficial. They can help with acne, hyperpigmentation, moles and maintenance. Check out the Black Skin Directory started by Dija Ayodele who is an experienced esthetician and all round amazing human.
