7 Things to Know Before Visiting the Blue Lagoon

7 things you need to know before visiting the blue lagoon

Hello my travel junkies, how are you coping with the lock down and no travelling? It may be a few months before any of us are able to travel anywhere but that doesn’t mean you can’t prepare. Since visiting the blue lagoon in February, I picked up a few things. Here are 7 things you need to know before visiting the blue lagoon.

7 Things you need to know before visiting the blue lagoon

Location

The Blue Lagoon is located near to Kefalivik airport which most international flight arrive into. It makes sense to either, visit the lagoon when you arrive or, on your way out the country. When we were there, we did it on the way in and it worked really well for us. You can purchase a bus ticket to pick you up from the airport and drop you in Reykjavik.

Timings

The Blue lagoon opens from 8am and closes at 10pm. This is perfect for most arrivals into Iceland. The drive to the lagoon from the airport is around 20-30 minutes. You can plan your bus pick-up around your flight arrival and blue lagoon entry time. Or, if you’ve decided to drive, you’re good to go!

Luggage

If you’re thinking it will be a hassle to take your luggage with you, think again. There is luggage storage before you even get inside of the building. You pay a fee to the attendant, making sure you take what you need before departing. Oh and keep your receipt so you can collect after 😉

7 things you need to know before visiting the blue lagoon- geothermal spa

Children

I think it’s so important for kids to explore the world with their parents. So if you were thinking that you couldn’t take your pre-teen or teenager, think again. The lagoon accepts children from aged 2 and up. Oh and it’s free entry or children 13 years and under. Thank me later 😉

Facilities

The geothermal pool isn’t the only thing you can partake in. There’s a restaurant, waterfall, sauna and steam room. All of which you can enjoy to your heart’s content. The only area that was ‘off-limits’ are the areas where you paid for the whole package. There are 3 tiers; comfort EUR 43, premium EUR 61 and luxury EUR485. We went with the comfort package and was given a towel, drink and mud mask.

Speaking of drinks, there’s a bar inside of the water itself. Fancy a glass of wine or a smoothie? Swim on up to the bar and order away.

Electronics

Of course everyone wants to record and make memories of their time in the blue lagoon. Who wouldn’t? Please protect your phone or camera equipment. I wrapped my phone in a carrier bag, so I could film this. You can prepare and get one of those clear cases to keep it dry and safe. If your phone falls in the water, the chances of retrieving it is pretty small.

Hacks

If you’ve made it this far, thank you! A few hacks to enjoying the blue lagoon to the fullest. 1) take your own slippers and robe. Trust me going in and out the water in winter time is cold! 2) if you wear contact lenses, take them out. The minerals in the water can irritate your eyes. 3) you will be given a face mask which packed full of minerals. Do not wash the mask off in the water. This will irritate your skin!! There’s a fresh water tap under one of the bridges. 4) prices vary and oftentimes later in the evening is cheaper! Think around 6pm and onwards. You will need to be out of the water by 9.30pm so they can close at 10pm. 5) Ladies do not get your hair wet, it will be dry and will require a lot of conditioner to get it back to normal.

Hopefully you found my 7 things you need to know before visiting the blue lagoon helpful. You can add the tips in to prepare for it ;). What’s your next holiday destination (when we can travel)?

Thank you for reading and until next time, be well and be safe! x
