Hello my lovely, how are you?
I’ve been pondering about feelings/emotions (they’re interchangeable) lately and whether there are positive or negative emotions. When I was training as a therapist (counsellor) a few years ago, I read a lot about the importance of your emotions and how suppressing them can cause a lot of trouble. Basically it can come and bite you in the backside if you lock them away. Anyways, the topic of emotions is always around. If you think about it, practically every action has had an emotion beneath it. Look at the self development industry and I’m pretty sure your feelings are brought into the equation. Years ago, laws were shaped based upon how leaders ‘felt’ about a certain issue. I’m sure you get the picture…right?!
Anyway, I’ve been thinking about whether there’s such a thing as negative emotions and by extension, positive emotions. For instance the internet to me is neither good nor bad, it just is. Rather it’s a tool that we control to do what we do with and that can be positive or negative and I wonder if the same can be said for emotions.
Can I let you in on a little secret? Come closer…..anger isn’t a negative emotion. Yes I know it’s shocking but it really isn’t a bad thing to feel angry, what makes anger ‘dangerous’ is what you do with it. Don’t believe me? Sir Bob Geldof, got angry (from all accounts, seriously pissed off) when he saw starving children in Africa on tv. What did he do? He used his influence, power, money and created Band Aid. He got angry because he felt moved, compassionate and empathy. See what I’m getting at here?
You may ask, well Majean, what about those people who have used their anger and their actions had a negative influence? Well, was it the anger or whatever ‘negative’ emotion? Or was it the action? See we all have a choice and it’s up to us to decide what we’re going to do with how we feel. Van Gogh felt ‘negative’ feelings all the damn time, yet he channelled that into the beautiful works of art we love and admire.
Side note: people who suffer with anxiety and depression or any mental health illness, are ill and need professional help and support
I don’t for one second think it’s that simplistic but neither do I think it’s feasible to only have ‘positive’ feelings all the time. It just isn’t possible because we are human. Yin and yang, plus ish happens all the time in life. So if you’re feeling down, low or angry don’t put pressure on yourself to irradicate said feelings otherwise….you guessed it, it’ll come back and bite you in the backside.
I have more to say on this topic, such as, what to do with the ‘negative’ feelings that arise so if you’re interested in reading more, or sharing your point of view, please leave a comment below.
As always thanks for reading.
Until next time, be well.
